Frequently asked questions about SCORE.

  • What does SCORE mean? The acronym Score was derived from  "Service Corps Of Retired Executives". The fact that a growing number of members are still actively working has made this redundant. Thus we are now  known as "Counselors to America’s Small Business".

  • What is SCORE?   SCORE is an Association that is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)

  • Who funds SCORE?  Limited funding is provided by the Federal Government through the SBA. Chapter #87 relies on the generous support of the Counties, the Cities and local businesses. Our expenses are kept low by the fact that all the counselors donate their time free to the chapter.

  • How big is SCORE?   Our Chapter, which serves Volusia and Flagler counties, has about 25 active members.  We are looking for new members, particularly active executives. (see Volunteers Needed)  There are 12,000 active and recently retired acvolunteers nationwide serving in over 375 chapters.

  • How old is SCORE?   Nationally SCORE was formed in 1964,and Chapter #87 started  in 1965 .

  • Is SCORE confidential? Yes. Anything disclosed to our counselors is held in strict confidence. Annually each counselor has to read, agree to and sign a Code of Ethics, which includes a confidentiality statement.

  • Does SCORE provide loans? No. Generally loans are provided by commercial banks and financial institutions. SCORE’s  function is to help the client prepare the necessary documentation  to  secure the loan. This includes a creditable business plan that will pass the scrutiny of the bank’s loan officer.
